The population of the district is increasing rapidly.  In 1983, the population of the Yong Kang District was approximately 86,000 people. By 1993, the population had exceeded 150,000 and the community was upgraded to city status. On September 1st, 2009, the Ministry of Interior announced “Tainan County/City Merger and Restructuring Plan”. On December 25th, 2010, TainanCounty and TainanCity were officially merged into “TainanCity”, whereas the YongKangCity was restructured as the Yong Kang District, TainanCity. The current population is 234,860 (as of the end of October 2021), and the district is the most densely populated district in TainanCity. The main reason behind this population growth is that the booming industrial and traffic developments attracted a large number of people from neighboring towns or villages and outer cities to work and live in Yong Kang.
